Golden fries smothered in melty cheese, caramelized onions, and In-N-Out’s secret sauce. The ultimate copycat Animal Style Fries—messy, cheesy, and irresistible.
5American cheese slices(or to taste! Feel free to add extra cheese)
1packet ofStore bought fries of choice(about 28 ounces)
Instructions
Caramelize the onions: Add the chopped onions and ½ cup water to a skillet over medium heat. Sauté/steam for 2–4 minutes until slightly softened. Stir in the butter, sugar, and salt, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Continue cooking, stirring often, and add small splashes of water as needed to prevent sticking. Keep going until the onions are golden brown and jammy, about 12–15 minutes total.
Make the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and jalapeño brine until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Cook the fries: Bake or air-fry your store-bought fries according to package directions until golden and crispy.
Melt the cheese: While the fries are hot, layer American cheese slices on top so they melt into a gooey blanket (about a minute before they're done cooking)
Assemble: Top the cheesy fries with caramelized onions and finish with a generous drizzle (or pour!) of the sauce.
Serve: Eat immediately while everything is hot, melty, and saucy.
Notes
(1) Prep the onions and sauce in advance to make assembly super fast.(2) Air fryer fries work best for crispiness, but oven-baked fries hold up well too.(3) For extra indulgence, layer more cheese between the fries before adding toppings.(4) (Serve immediately—Animal Style Fries don’t sit well (but trust me, they won’t last long anyway).
