There’s nothing quite like a warm, spiced cup of chai to bring comfort to your day. Whether you enjoy it in the morning, as an afternoon pick-me-up, or even iced on a hot day, chai is a staple in many households. But let’s be honest—store-bought chai concentrates often taste too sweet, lack depth, or just don’t hit the right balance of spices. That’s why I’m sharing my authentic chai concentrate recipe, which is bold, aromatic, and incredibly easy to make at home.

Chai (which simply means “tea” in Hindi) is a traditional Indian beverage made by brewing black tea with warming spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. Every family has their own way of making chai, and this chai concentrate recipe captures all the rich flavors while allowing you to easily make a cup whenever the craving strikes!

Ingredients for Homemade Chai Concentrate Recipe

Each ingredient in this recipe plays a crucial role in building the bold and complex flavor of chai. If you want to make the best chai concentrate recipe, make sure you have the following ingredients:

  • Black Tea Bags: The base of chai, providing strong, full-bodied flavor.
  • Cardamom (Black & Green): Green cardamom adds a floral, slightly sweet aroma, while black cardamom brings in smoky depth.
  • Cinnamon Stick: Adds warmth and a hint of sweetness.
  • Cloves & Black Peppercorns: Provide heat and a spicy kick.
  • Star Anise: Brings a subtle licorice-like flavor.
  • Fennel Seeds: Enhances the sweetness and rounds out the spice blend.
  • Fresh Ginger: Gives chai its signature zing and warmth.
  • Brown Sugar: Adds a caramel-like sweetness to balance the bold flavors.

NOTE: When making chai concentrate, you can use either tea bags or loose-leaf tea, and both have their advantages. Tea bags are convenient, mess-free, and easy to remove, making them great for quick brewing. On the other hand, loose-leaf tea offers a richer and more robust flavor, as the leaves have more room to expand and release their full essence. If you opt for loose-leaf tea, use 2 tablespoons of black tea leaves and strain well before storing your concentrate.

Ingredients

  • 1 star anise
  • 1 large black cardamom
  • 5 green cardamom
  • 5 cloves
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • 1 inch piece of cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
  • 5 tea bags
  • 2 tsp ginger minced
  • 6 cups water
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients: Add all of the dried whole spices to a spice mixer and blend until they become a powder. Crush the ginger until it turns into a paste. Rip open your tea bags to get the loose leaf tea out.
  • Simmer the Chai Base: In a medium saucepan, add 6 cups of water, spices, ginger, and brown sugar. Simmer for 7-8 minutes, and then add the loose leaf tea. Then, add tea bags (ripped open). Bring everything to a boil, and let it simmer for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop.
  • Strain & Store: Remove from heat and strain the concentrate using a sieve lined with cheese cloth into a jar or bottle. Let it cool before storing in the refrigerator.
  • Make a Chai Latte: When ready to serve, mix equal parts chai concentrate and milk. Heat for a warm latte or pour over ice for a refreshing iced chai.

Notes

If you are using tea bags for your chai concentrate recipe, make sure to rip the tea bags open and pour out the contents into your pot. Removing the outer layer of the teabag will give the chai concentrate a stronger and more robust flavor.
