If you’ve ever dreamed of sipping Butterbeer while wandering through Hogsmeade, you’re not alone. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’ve always wanted to recreate the iconic drink at home. After a little kitchen wizardry, I came up with this easy Harry Potter Butterbeer recipe.

It’s sweet, creamy, and packed with a rich butterscotch flavor. Serve it for a Harry Potter movie night, themed party, or anytime you want a fun, cozy treat. Plus, it comes together in just a few minutes. I top this drink with a homemade butterscotch whipped cream, but for an extra fun topping, add a spoonful of my homemade marshmallow fluff for an even creamier, sweeter finish.

And if you’re looking for more cozy drink recipes, try my Polar Express hot chocolate, whipped honey coffee, or spiced golden milk. And for an easy café-style upgrade, my thick and creamy cold foam is perfect for topping iced coffee, matcha, or cold brew.

What is Butterbeer?

Butterbeer is a fictional beverage from the beloved Harry Potter series. In the books, it is famously served at wizarding pubs and inns such as “The Three Broomsticks”, “The Leaky Cauldron”, and “The Hog’s Head.” In the series, Butterbeer is described as a sweet, frothy drink with a hint of butterscotch. And, it’s a favorite among Hogwarts students.

Where Can You Get The Butterbeer From Harry Potter?

One of the only places you can purchase an authentic butterbeer is in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. I have been lucky enough to visit Universal Studios in both California and Florida! And one of my favorite activities there is to explore the Harry Potter universe where they serve delicious ice-cold butterbeer that is out of this world! But sadly, we can’t all go to Universal Studios when we want our butterbeer fix. So, I knew I had to make my own version at home!

What Does Butterbeer Taste Like?

If you’re wondering what Butterbeer tastes like, think sweet, creamy, and rich with notes of butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel. Homemade Butterbeer recipes can vary quite a bit. Some people like to create versions that are served cold and fizzy while others make theirs warm and cozy. Since my homemade Butterbeer recipe is inspired by the iconic Butterbeer served at Universal Studios, it is served cold with a rich butterscotch base and a sweet whipped topping.

Key Ingredients for Butterbeer

This recipe may be magical, but thankfully, it’s also super easy to make and requires only a few ingredients.

  • Butterscotch Syrup. The base of our butterbeer – made with salted butter, brown sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. This rich, caramel-like sauce gives butterbeer its signature flavor. You can use a store-bought version if you’d like (I recommend the one from Smucker’s, it tastes so nostalgic). But, if you’d like to make a homemade version, I have a delicious recipe for you later in this post!
  • Whipped Cream Topping: A fresh homemade whipped cream that’s made combining heavy cream with a touch of my delicious homemade butterscotch syrup. (Again, feel free to use store-bought instead if you’d like). This sweet, buttery layer adds such a luxurious finish to this drink.
  • Root Beer: The fizzy, slightly spicy element that complements the creamy, butterscotch flavors. Using root beer gives the drink that classic butterbeer flavor profile. NOTE: Cream soda is another popular option and gives the drink a lighter vanilla flavor. Root beer gives this version a deeper, more spiced flavor.

FAQ

What type of alcohol would this work well with?

There’s a lot of good options! I think butterscotch schnapps, vanilla vodka, or coconut rum will add the perfect boozy twist!

How do you make a hot version of butterbeer?

For a warm version, I recommend swapping the cold root beer or cream soda for hot apple cider or warm milk. Heat your chosen base until steaming, then stir in the butterscotch syrup until smooth and fully combined. Pour it into a mug and finish with the same butterscotch whipped cream topping. Apple cider gives the drink a cozy, spiced flavor, while milk makes it richer and creamier.

How should I store leftover butterscotch syrup?

Store leftover butterscotch syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Gently warm it before using if it thickens.

Notes

  • Use cold root beer. Chilled root beer makes the drink more refreshing and helps the topping stay fluffy.
  • Let the syrup cool slightly. If it’s too hot, it can melt the whipped cream.
  • Adjust the sweetness. Add more or less butterscotch syrup depending on how sweet you like your Butterbeer.
  • Pour slowly. Root beer foams quickly when poured over the syrup.
  • Make the syrup ahead. Store it in the refrigerator, then gently warm it if it becomes too thick.
  • Vanilla syrup option: You can use 2 pumps of vanilla syrup instead of vanilla extract.
  • Store-bought shortcut: Store-bought butterscotch syrup can also be used for the whipped cream topping.
  • Make it hot: For a warm Butterbeer, swap the root beer for hot apple cider. Heat the cider until steaming, stir in the butterscotch syrup, then top with the butterscotch whipped cream.
