What’s the Secret?

The key to making the most delicious cream cheese frosting for your cinnamon rolls is using (1) salted butter and (2) heavy cream. I know this may be controversial, but I always use salted butter in any frosting recipe to balance out the sugars and prevent them from being a sickly sweet flavor. If you only have unsalted butter, I would add about 1/4 of a teaspoon of salt to this frosting recipe.

Is it Necessary to Use a Stand Mixer To Make Cream Cheese Frosting for My Cinnamon Rolls?

Nope! I think a stand mixer makes things much easier, but you can definitely make this recipe just as well mixing by hand – either with a whisk or fork. However, you may need to soften the butter and cream cheese a little bit extra to make them easier to mix and achieve the ideal cream cheese frosting.

Why do you add heavy cream instead of regular milk to your frosting?

Adding heavy whipping cream will ensure that the frosting remains light and silky rather than getting watered down by regular milk. Plus, if you over-whip, the heavy cream ensures that the frosting remains light and fluffy.
